What is Movin’ for LIFE about?
The overall goal for the Movin‘ for LIFE (Lasting Improvements for Fitness and Energy) program is to develop a model of healthy living for residents of the Ninth Ward community, such as eating healthy and being more physically active, and promote existing resources and activities. All program activities will be carried out in the Upper and Lower Ninth Ward for all residents and then shared with other New Orleans neighborhoods.
Every step of the program will involve input from the Ninth Ward Community Coalition and focus groups with neighborhood residents.
The Movin’ for LIFE program will increase opportunities for residents to be more physically active and make healthy foods more accessible.
Why is Movin’ for LIFE important?
Lack of physical activity and poor diet can have a negative impact on a person’s health. Being over‐ weight or obese is a leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. Not maintaining a healthy weight has dire consequences in the form of life‐threatening problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and certain cancers. Unfortunately, overweight and obesity among New Orleans adults is very high, reaching rates of almost 70%.
